Gregor’s Room

The biggest feeling I got when reading Gregor’s Room was feeling uncomfortable. I decided to channel this feeling for my composition. Instead of making a traditional bed, I chose to make each part of the bed a different shape from what it would traditionally be. Another theme from the story that I wanted to capture was the idea of growing out of oneself. To show this I decided to have a childlike pattern with a variety of colors for the bed frame and then have darker, and more muted colors for the other parts of the bed such as the box spring and blanket. The alarm clock was a feature to represent lost time which is why the numbers are mixed around on the clock.

Touch Assignment 2

The Skin Really Does Have Eyes 3x4.5’ Mixed Media: Googley Eyes on Skin

“The Skin Has Eyes- Touch allows us to find our way in the world in the darkness or in other circumstances where we can’t fully use our other senses.” (94).

The idea behind this was to quite literally show that the skin has senses and with touch, the skin tells your brain what it sees. Like if a dog’s nose touches your leg then your brain can feel and know that before you look down to see the dog.

Touch Assignment #1

Frozen Fibers 3x4” Mixed Media: Yarn, Hair, Water, and Glass

“Even though we can’t puff up our fur the way other animals do, either to look big and mean or to keep warm, we have tiny leftover erector pili muscles that cause some of our hairs to stand up when we’re cold or scared” (93).

The idea behind this piece was to show the human delicacy that can come with fear. From afar, the hair seems to be soft and suspended in water. However, to the touch, it was cold, frozen, and spiked. Frozen in place.
